Abortion opponent  Gianna Jessen spoke at the Red Barn on the campus of the University of Louisville on Jan 26, 2010. Gianna’s 17 year old mother attempted an abortion by saline solution when she was 7.5 months pregnant with Gianna. During this form of abortion, saline solution is injected into the womb where the baby is burned inside and out from the chemical. Within 24 hours the baby is delivered burt and dead.

Not so with Gianna. She lived. And the abortion doctor was out of the room at the time when Gianna was born at 2lb. She shares all this in a 2 part video in this link.

Her life is a story of great sorrow. But, in her own words, “You cannot have great joy without great sorrow. I am a person of great joy.” Most importantly, she knows the hope to which all of the imperfections of this world point, and that is the hope of Jesus Christ. She was born into affliction, but born again in the the certain hope of eternal life with Christ.

An encounter between Gianna and her birth mother speak to the miracle of Gianna’s new birth. When her birth mother appeared at one of Gianna’s speaking engagements she said these unthinkable words to her biological daughter; “You are an embarrassment to our family.” Gianna’s response? “I forgive you for what you have done.” These words were possible because of the gospel Gianna embraced and preached to herself at that moment, reminding herself, “I am God’s girl. I don’t belong to you. I belong to Christ.”
